Introducing Aidan Michael Lam and Brooke Hong Lam

The Day I Almost Missed Aidan’s and Brooke’s Birth

It was December 2nd, 2008, and I was in the middle of my 2 o’clock meeting when Thi IM’ed me saying, “i’m contracting every 11-13 minutes since 1pm”. Of course in my state of shock and with my lack of literary prowess, my only response was, “are you serious?” I couldn’t believe it, was it really going to happen? Were Aidan and Brooke going to be born today? A few moments later, Thi IM’ed me again and said, “that last one was 10 mins”. I felt my heart began to race and I told Thi to call her doctor. Twenty minutes passed, I finished my meeting, but I didn’t hear anything from Thi. Leaving the meeting, I called Thi wondering if she was OK. After a few rings, she finally picked up the phone and to my surprise, she said that her mom was taking her to the hospital. Now I was really getting nervous. I told her right then and there I was coming home, but before I could finish my sentence, Thi stopped me and said that I should stay at work. After some back and forth, I finally conceded to her (only partially though because after she hung up, I left work). On the road, I called Thi to tell her I was on my way home. I also told her that I was going to go home to get our stuff before heading to the hospital, but again, Thi was very adamant that she was not going to go into labor. She told me that I should just go straight to the hospital and expect to just pick her up. Again, being a stubborn husband, I decided to go home and pick up our stuff anyways. Finally, I arrived at the hospital to find Thi in the labor and delivery recovery ward doped up with medicine to stop the contractions. Of course, the medicine didn’t quite work and then the next few hours seemed like a blur. Before we knew it, Thi was 4 centimeters dilated and we were preparing for the delivery of Aidan and Brooke. An hour after that, Aidan Michael Lam and Brooke Hong Lam were born at 8:29 PM and 8:31 PM.

Looking back, I couldn’t believe that a simple decision earlier that day could have meant I would have missed the most wonderful event of my life
