No Day but Today

December 4, 2005

Mike and I watched RENT last night. We saw the play on Broadway in October so we already knew what’s it’s about and just wanted to go see how it compares. We heard a lot of mixed reviews about it and thought we’d give it a chance (plus I had free tickets). The cool thing was they brought a lot of the original cast back to do the movie, so if you are familiar with the soundtrack, there will be some familiar voices for you.

We both actually really enjoyed it. It’s not much different from the Broadway play except that it was actually a lot easier to follow. Rent is one of those musicals that tell the story through its songs, so unless you have good hearing or know the soundtrack before watching it, it’s a little difficult to follow.

Some have said that the story is a bit corny but if you can read between the lines and see the deeper truth behind it, it is a really sweet message. I took RENT as a good story about life and friendship. This movie isn’t for everybody (which is true for most musicals) but I recommended it to anybody interested in seeing it. :)
